In a large pot heat oil until simmering. Add onion and cook until soft and slightly browned.
Stir in the garlic, rosemary, and red pepper flakes. Cook stirring for 1-2 minutes.
Add the beans, broth, and bay leaf. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes.
Stir in the spinach and lemon juice if using. Serve with parmesan cheese if desired.
