Chocolate Cupcakes with Chocolate Buttercream- this is a simple and straight forward recipe for moist chocolate cupcakes and fluffy chocolate buttercream.


  • Cupcake
  • 1 stick 1/2 cup butter, softened at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Chocolate Frosting
  • 3 sticks butter softened at room temperature
  • 1 cups cocoa powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1-2 tablespoons heavy cream


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line 2 muffin tins with paper liners and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in eggs one at a time beating well after each. Add in the vanilla and combine.
  3. In a medium bowl combine the flour, cocoa powder and baking soda. Add to the butter mixture alternating with the buttermilk. Beating well after each addition.
  4. Fill paper liners 2/3 full. Bake for 13-16 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
  5. To make the frosting beat the butter in a medium sized bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in the cocoa powder, salt, powdered sugar, vanilla and 1 tablespoon of cream. Add in more cream as needed. Frost as desired.
