Tips and Suggestions:

  • If you baste at the beginning of the cooking process, you must bake the ham at a lower temperature to prevent the glaze from burning. Many recipes have you bake at 350*F, but you will be much happier if you lower it to 325!
  • Score the ham if you aren’t using a spiral ham. It will allow the glaze to seep into the ham.
  • Baste before and after the ham is finished cooking for a luscious, shiny glaze that not only enhances the flavor but also adds a beautiful, caramelized finish to your ham, making it a show-stopping centerpiece on any table!
Ingredients: brown sugar, butter, honey, dijon, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg.

How to Make a Honey Ham Glaze:

This is a super simple recipe. All you need to do is combine everything in a pan and heat through. This will dissolve the brown sugar and make the glaze nice, smooth, and easy to brush on the ham.

You can baste during the cooking time if you like. It does seem time-consuming, but it really is worth it! It makes the ham extra delicious.

What Kind of Ham Do I Use?

This glaze will work on a bone-in or boneless ham. If your ham has a rind, be sure to remove that before glazing.

I suggest not using a spiral-cut ham because it is prone to drying out. Also, bone-in hams will provide the best flavor. But it is ultimately up to you! This glaze will work on any ham you like.

Instead, score the ham. Be sure to score only through the fat cap and not into the meat. This ensures the ham will not dry out, but the glaze can reach the meat to flavor it.

How Long Does it Take to Cook a Ham?

A bone-in ham baked at 325*F will take around 15 minutes per pound. Towards the end, you should check your ham with a meat thermometer to make sure it doesn’t get overcooked. It is easy to overcook ham, and that will dry it out. Aim for an internal temperature of 115-120*F.
