ingredients needed to make homemade hamburger helper recipe

Key Ingredients to Make My Hamburger Helper Recipe

  • GROUND BEEF – You can also substitute with ground turkey if you’d like.
  • ONION – Sauté it up along with the beef and spices for maximum flavor.
  • SPICES – I swear by paprika, parsley, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper for this hamburger helper recipe!
  • MILK – Feel free to use broth if you don’t have milk on hand.
  • BEEF BROTH – You can also use chicken broth if you prefer.
  • ELBOW MACARONI – For the ultimate hamburger helper homemade recipe that will take you back to your childhood! You can also use a similar pasta shape instead.
  • TOMATO SAUCE – For added savory flavor.
  • CHEDDAR CHEESE – It’s always best to grate your own cheese. The pre-shredded kind is coated in anti-caking agents and doesn’t melt as well. I’m a Tillamook cheese fan, and it’s perfect for this dish!

Made this gluten-free for my guys and it worked well. Added an extra half cup of GF elbow noodles since they aren’t as big as regular wheat noodles. Lots of possibilities for spices too.

I made this as a quick dinner tonight after a late grocery trip. Didn’t have tomato sauce so used about half as much tomato paste…. This was very good and everyone ate it up!

Pretty good! I didn’t have liquid beef broth so I just used a hefty spoon of the beef base. Later (after a few minutes) I forgot about the base and added a healthy does of salt, lol! Needless to say it was well salted but next time I’ll be more cognizant and it should be perfect. Fast and easy.

This was a little bland. I added more spices plus a can of fire roasted tomatoes, chopped up green pepper and celery for a boost

I’m so happy that I found your recipe! I modified for vegetarians by subbing with Beyond Meat hot links and veg broth. Brought back fond memories of my latch key childhood days too. Can you do a Rice-A-Roni recipe too? 😉

Yum! This satisfies my craving for hamburger Mac and cheese! Sometimes I’ll add chopped onions instead of powder or spring onions at the end for some extra color.

I have dairy allergies so I substituted the milk with hemp milk, real cheddar cheese with dairy free cream cheese and Parmesan cheese! So delish and such a smooth texture!

Growing up, my mom never brought home and made boxed hamburger helper but the commercials made them look so good and I always wanted to try it. Once I started getting my own groceries I finally tried it out and it was such a disappointment! Some weird funky aftertaste in the cheese sauce, I can still remember how off putting it was 20 years later. Anyway, glad I used this recipe. I FINALLY fulfilled that childhood craving.

I looked through a few home hamburger helper recipes and ultimately chose this one because I had a can of tomato sauce and some milk on hand (other recipes generally called for tomato paste, some without milk). Did not have cayenne nor parsley, accidentally dumped a lot of paprika, used fresh minced garlic (I love garlic, so 4 cloves), and chopped up some fresh tomato and basil to throw in at the end. Otherwise, used the same measurements and this was really delicious and easy!

    • I haven’t froze this particular dish but if you do I recommend cooking the pasta just until al dente and no longer. Cool completely then freeze in a freezer safe container.
