Cinnamon Sugar French Toast Sticks - an easy breakfast that you can make ahead and reheat later!

Cinnamon Sugar French Toast Sticks

I present you with my kid’s favorite breakfast of all time: cinnamon sugar French toast sticks!! We definitely don’t have these fried French toast sticks on a regular basis, but on special occasions, they’re a must!

They would also make a great brunch option, and you can make them ahead and reheat! My kids love these so much because, well, they are fun to dip and dunk in warm maple syrup!

Some more fun brunch options include: Lemon Muffins, Ham and Cheddar Biscuit Rolls, Ham and Cheddar Scones, and Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Crescent Rolls.

I have made cinnamon sugar French toast sticks both by frying them and baking them, and my kids like both equally. I secretly prefer the fried version — shhhh, don’t tell!

Fried French Toast Sticks Ingredients

BREAD: We recommend Texas toast because it’s nice and thick and will make the perfect French toast sticks!

EGGS: You’ll need to use the entire egg. They work as a binder and help soften the bread.

MILK: It’s fine to use whole milk or half and half. Both work well, so it’s entirely up to you.

VANILLA: I love the flavor a dash of vanilla gives. You could also use almond extract for a fun twist.

CINNAMON & SUGAR: Naturally, you can’t have cinnamon sugar French toast sticks without the cinnamon and sugar!

BUTTER: We prefer to use butter to make fried French toast because it gives it a lovely flavor. Oil is okay, but it will not have the buttery flavor we all love.

About these Cinnamon Sugar French Toast Sticks:

  • You can use regular bread — they still taste the same. The thicker Texas toast just helps make them more sturdy and less floppy.
  • Also, using day-old bread that is a little less than fresh is great. You can also lay your bread out overnight (uncovered) to get day-old bread. I don’t always do this, but it does help make sturdier fried French toast sticks.
  • Make ahead option: Freeze completely cooled French toast sticks in a freezer bag for up to 2 months.  Reheat in a 425 degree F oven for 15 minutes, or microwave for 30-40 seconds or until heated through.

Cinnamon Sugar French Toast Recipe FAQs

Can I make cinnamon sugar French toast instead of sticks?

Yep! You can follow this recipe to make cinnamon sugar French toast and skip cutting the bread into sticks. It is the same result, except kids tend to prefer the sticks. Otherwise, it tastes the same.

Can I use different bread?

Sure, you can use French bread, brioche, or any other firm bread that you like. Just cut into sticks and follow the rest of the steps.

How do you reheat fried French toast sticks?

You can reheat the French toast sticks in a skillet with a little butter, or place them in the air fryer with some butter lightly brushed on them. For the air fryer, cook at 375 for 3-4 minutes or until they are hot.

Additionally, you can reheat them in the microwave. However, they tend to be soggy this way, so we don’t really recommend that.

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk or half and half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup (100g) sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • butter for frying

Instructions

  • Cut each slice into 3 equal sticks; set aside.
  • In a large shallow dish combine the eggs, milk, and vanilla; set aside.
  • In another shallow dish or plate combine the sugar and cinnamon; set aside.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium to medium low heat.  Add 2 tablespoons butter to melt.  Roll the sticks in the egg mixture (don’t let them soak) and add to skillet (be careful not to overcrowd the pan).  Fry until golden on each side.
  • Remove sticks from skillet and immediately roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture.  Serve immediately.

Notes

  1. You can use regular bread, they still taste the same, it’s just the thicker Texas toast helps make them more sturdy and less floppy.
  2. Also, using day old bread that is a little less than fresh is great.  You can lay out the bread overnight to dry out and get day old bread.  I don’t always do this but it does help make a more sturdy stick.
  3. Make ahead option: freeze completely cooled french toast sticks in a freezer bag for up to 2 months.  Reheat in a 425 degree F oven for 15 minutes or microwave for 30-40 seconds or until heated through.
  4. Baking option
    1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.  Lightly coat a baking sheet with non-stick spray.
    2. Instead of frying place sticks in a single layer on prepared baking sheet.  Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.  Flip sticks over and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
    3. Bake for 15-20 minutes flipping sticks halfway through baking.
