About this Hot Cocoa Mix:

  • Feel free to use semi-sweet or milk chocolate in place of the dark chocolate if you prefer.
  • Use a high-quality chocolate and cocoa powder for this recipe for best results.  Brands such as Lindt and Ghirardelli for solid chocolate and Hershey’s will work great for the cocoa powder.
  • I added mini marshmallows and chocolate chips to this mason jar but feel free to add in different items such as crushed peppermints, toffee bits, different flavored marshmallows, or even different flavored chocolate chips.
  • This will keep at room temperature for up to 3 months.

Supplies needed to make this Homemade Mason Jar Gift:

  • Quart mason jars and matching lids and rings (I prefer the wide mouth for easier filling)
  • Funnel (found in the canning section of your grocery store or hardware store)
  • Green and Red tissue paper cut into small squares.
  • Red and white kitchen twine.  (I found this twine at Wal-Mart in the cake decorating section.)
  • Ingredients to fill the jar (included in the recipe card below)
  • Printable (below the recipe card) or handwritten instructions to attach to the jar.

Ingredients

  • cup (210g) powdered sugar
  • 6 ounces (170g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup (80g) cocoa powder, any kind is fine
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

Hot Cocoa Mix:

  • Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until powdery.  Store in an airtight container.

To Use:

  • Heat one cup of milk in a saucepan until it starts to simmer.  Add in ¼ – ⅓ cup of hot cocoa mix and whisk until well combined.
  • Pour into a mug and top with any desired toppings.

To Make Mason Jar Gift:

  • Spoon hot cocoa mix into a 1-quart mason jar (I like to use a funnel to help keep things cleaner). Gently tap jar on the counter to help layers settle. Add a layer of mini marshmallows and chocolate chips. Seal with lid and attach the recipe card.

  2. I have not made this yet, but am concerned about adding vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and the propensity for mold if it is a mason jar gift…is this a typo, or for real? Thanks in advance!
