These red, white, and blue Fruit Skewers are a quick and easy dessert the whole family will love! Just thread fresh strawberries and blueberries onto a skewer with a chunk of fluffy angel food cake for a delightful snack or dessert. Add a drizzle of chocolate to take your treat to the next level!
Why You’ll Love These Colorful Fruit Skewers
This is such an easy and delicious dessert – I don’t know anyone who hasn’t devoured these skewers every time I’ve made them! They’re such a hit at parties and they hold up to heat well so they’re perfect for a summer BBQ.
This recipe is great to have in your back pocket for a last-minute sweet treat, and you can switch it up with whatever fruit you have on hand! I made these a patriotic red, white, and blue theme for the 4th of July, so blueberries and strawberries are the star of the show. However, you can feel free to customize yours with your favorite fruit!
The angel food cake adds the “white” in red, white, and blue, but it also incorporates a different texture and light sweetness that complements the berries perfectly. You can make it homemade, or just buy one and slice it up to speed up the process. Today, I’ll also share some ingredient additions and variations you can make to these skewers to make them even more delicious (chocolate drizzle, anyone?)!
Ingredients
When I say this recipe is easy – I mean it! All you need is angel food cake (or pound cake for a sturdier option), strawberries, and blueberries!
Wooden skewers hold the dessert together and make this dessert so easy to transport and serve!
More Fruit for Kabobs
If you’re not sticking with the red, white, and blue theme, feel free to use any combination of your favorite fruits! Here are some options to inspire you.
- Orange slices
- Pineapple chunks
- Banana
- Mango
- Kiwi
- Apple
- Your favorite kind of melon
How To Make Fruit Skewers
Step 1: Prep Angel Food Cake
Cut the angel food cake into 1-inch cubes. They should be thick enough to not fall apart when skewered.
Step 2: Prep the Berries
Wash the berries and then trim the stems off of the strawberries. Pat them dry.
Step 3: Assemble Skewers
Thread the angel food and berries onto the skewers in your desired pattern. Enjoy!
FAQs
If you weren’t using cake, I would say absolutely! However, I wouldn’t want the moisture from the berries to soak into the cake and make it mushy. I would suggest preparing the berries and the cake for threading and then assembling them a couple of hours before serving.
Nope! You only have to soak kabob skewers if you’re grilling them so that they don’t catch fire.
Cover your skewers with saran wrap and store them in the refrigerator for up to one day. It’d be best if you could store the skewers with only the berries on them so they don’t get the cake soggy.
More Fruit Skewers Ideas
Customize your skewers with your favorite fruit, dips, and/or toppings!
- Drizzle chocolate over your skewers.
- Instead of using cake, dunk another piece of fruit in vanilla yogurt or white chocolate.
- Use different kinds of fruits to make your skewers a rainbow theme.
- Have a few dips available for your guests to dunk or drizzle over their skewers. You can use yogurt, chocolate, nutella, marshmallow fluff, whipped cream, and more!
- Coat a piece of fruit in a dip and then coat it with your favorite topping. Use mini chocolate chips, coconut flakes, or chopped nuts.
