Why I Love Homemade Apple Crisp

Apple crisp feels almost old-fashioned, doesn’t it? I love how it’s such a timeless treat that we all keep coming back to, and yes, I call it healthy! Life is all about balance, and although this crisp has brown sugar and butter in it, it also has oats and apples! To me, this is a wholesome treat for our body and soul.

I feel so passionately that I’ve also made a yummy strawberry crisp, blueberry crisp, and even an apple butter crisp. This one is the most traditional though, and not to play favorites, but it’s my favorite.

The apples are tender and the crisp is perfectly crispy! All you need to do is slice some apples and throw together the crumble topping for a delicious treat to end your day. Feel free to add some ice cream on top too!

Ingredients for a Healthy Apple Crisp Recipe

Not only is it a pretty wholesome and healthy dessert, but it’s also minimal work (that’s my favorite kind of sweet treat)! Of course you’ll need apples, and this recipe calls for about 4 medium tart apples. I find granny smith really good in an apple crisp because the tart flavor plays well with the sweetness of the oat topping. You could also use honey crisp, though!

Aside from the apples, you’ll just need a few ingredients to create your crumble topping, and some vanilla ice cream if you’d like.

Apple Crisp Topping

  • Brown Sugar
  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Old Fashioned Oats
  • Cinnamon
  • Ground Cloves
  • Butter (cold and cubed)

How to Make Apple Crisp

Step 1: Preheat

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2: Apples

Place the sliced and peeled apples in a greased 8-inch square baking dish.

Step 3: Crumble Topping

In a small bowl, combine the dry crumble ingredients. Then, cut in cold butter with two knives or a pastry blender until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle it over the apples in an even layer.

Step 4: Bake

Bake your apple crisp for 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender. Enjoy on its own or with a dollop of vanilla ice cream.

FAQs and Tips

Can I make apple crisp in an air fryer?

You can make apple crisp in an air fryer, but depending on the size of your air fryer you’ll probably have to make a smaller portion. You’ll follow the same instructions except you’ll want to put the apples in the air fryer for about 12 minutes so they can soften, and then you can add the crumble topping. Air fry for about 12-15 minutes longer until the crumble starts to crisp up.

What’s the difference between apple crumble and apple crisp?

Most people use these terms interchangeably, but technically an apple crumble doesn’t have oats in it while a crisp does.

Why is my apple crisp not crunchy?

That probably means that you didn’t cut in your butter enough. You want the crumble mixture to be all cohesive and crumbly when you sprinkle it on top.

Storing and Reheating an Apple Crisp

  • You can store your apple crisp in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
  • Allow the crisp to come to a complete cool before putting it in an airtight container and into the fridge. If you store it while it’s still warm it will get soggy.
  • You can reheat your apple crisp by covering it with a bit of tin foil and putting it in the oven at 350 F until it’s warmed through. You could also use the air fryer to reheat it.

Apple Crisp Variations

It’s such a beloved treat, it’s no wonder people have played around with different varieties of apple crisp. I know an apple and blackberry crumble is amazing, as is apple and rhubarb. If you want to play around with different flavors but similar textures, try making an apple and pear crisp!
