This Italian grilled cheese sandwich has been a long-time favorite of mine! After all, I’ve been eating these since I was a little girl. I remember my grandma making us grilled cheese and serving it with warmed spaghetti sauce!

A Classic Family Favorite

I think it’s safe to say that grilled cheese is one of the ultimate classic comfort foods. It’s got carbs, it’s got melty cheese, it’s got nostalgia.

I mean what’s not to like about a golden crispy crust flavored with Italian bread crumbs, super gooey and stretchy Provolone cheese all sandwiched between irresistible french bread? Now, take that nice, warm, cheese-filled sandwich and dip it into some homemade pizza sauce. Friends, it just doesn’t get much better than that!

Over the years, I’ve worked to perfect my own recipe, and these mouthwatering Italian grilled cheese sandwiches have become one of the most requested meals in my family! That, along with my Homemade Hamburger Helper and Three Cheese Pizza recipes, which is totally fine because anything loaded with melty cheeses is a win in my book.

Key Ingredients for Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwich:

  • BREAD: I always go for a fresh loaf of French bread when I want to make grilled cheese, but you can opt for you favorite bread.
  • CHEESE: You can also change up the cheese (or cheese combinations) for this recipe. I personally prefer Provolone cheese.
  • SECRET SAUCE: Ok, it’s not really a secret, but instead of buttering my bread, I like to dip coat it in the seasonings. You’ll need eggs, milk, Italian seasoning, bread crumbs, and garlic powder for this delicious coating.
  • DIPPING SAUCE: Some people like to dip grilled cheese in tomato soup, but I actually serve them with this homemade pizza sauce.

How to Make Italian Grilled Cheese Sandwich:

PREPARE THE BREAD: First, cut the ends off of the french bread, then hen cut the loaf into ¾-inch slices and set aside.

PREPARE COATING: Next, in a shallow dish, combine the seasoned bread crumbs, Italian seasoning and garlic powder. After that, in a separate shallow dish, combine the eggs and milk.

COAT THE BREAD: Then preheat a large skillet over medium-low heat with a thin layer of oil in the pan. Once the oil is hot, place 2 slices of cheese between 2 slices of bread then dip each side of the sandwich in the egg. After that, dip each side once more in the seasoned bread crumbs.

FRY & SERVE: Now, fry in a skillet for 2-3 minutes on each side. You’ll know your sandwich is finished when the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted. These Italian grilled cheese sandwiches are best served warm, shortly after cooking, with spaghetti sauce or homemade pizza sauce.

FAQs

How do you keep all the grilled cheese sandwiches warm while you cook?

I like to keep the sandwiches warm in a 170 degree oven while I finish cooking all of the grilled cheeses. This will also help to finish melting the cheese if your sandwich is already golden but the cheese hasn’t melted completely.

What is the best cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches?

Provolone is my personal favorite, but you can also use Colby, blue cheese, or Monterey Jack. Really, you can use whatever you prefer or even combine and mix your favorites!

How can I add flavor to my grilled cheese?

Depending on the flavor you want, you can try so many different spices! To make your grilled cheese a little spicy, you can add in some chili flakes. You can also toss in a few fresh herbs for a lighter note in this otherwise very heavy dish.

What goes with grilled cheese sandwiches?

I prefer to serve grilled cheese with tomato-based sauces, like pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce. The classic combo is grilled cheese with tomato soup, but you can also serve with a light salad, coleslaw, or enjoy it all on its own.
